The accounting programs at The Mason School of Business at The College of William and Mary continue to be regarded as some of the best in the country. The Public Accounting Report’s 2008 Annual Survey of Accounting Professors ranked the undergraduate program 17th among all accounting programs, moving up four spots from it 2007 ranking of 21st. The Master of Accounting program, celebrating only its 10th birthday this year, tied for 27th.

In the school-ranking section of the Annual Survey of Accounting Professors, accounting professors, department heads and department chairs were asked to name the undergraduate and graduate programs that offer degrees in accounting they feel most consistently turn out students capable of some day attaining partner status.
The survey had its largest voter turnout and the highest professor participation level to date. Since 2005 when it was not ranked, the undergraduate accounting program has improved steadily over the last three years. Its appearance in the top 20 represents one of the survey’s biggest gainers over this time period.
“We are delighted with this strong showing by our accounting programs,” said Dean Larry Pulley. “That we are so highly regarded by professors at other schools is gratifying, especially given our size. Most of the schools ranked ahead of us have much larger programs.”
Assistant Dean Kim Smith credits this success to the outstanding faculty and students at The Mason School. “Our faculty members invest in our programs to ensure that our students are ahead of the game in terms of critical knowledge such as fair value accounting, accounting for derivatives & securitizations, and international financial reporting standards (IFRS). And our students are both tremendously talented and extremely eager to learn. It’s a wonderful combination!”
The Mason School of Business is an AACSB-accredited school of business. Students are immersed in real business situations throughout the undergraduate and graduate business education programs. The Undergraduate Accounting Program is built in the tradition of the William and Mary undergraduate experience, delivering a highly personalized program, rich in program knowledge and crafted by scholar-teachers. Students are exposed to accounting scholars and professionals through the Wayne F. Gibbs Accounting Society and the annual “Meet the Firms Friday” brings industry and career options to the campus. The Master of Accounting Program is the only program of its kind to build a week-long trip to the top U.S. regulatory agencies into the curriculum. Sponsored by Veris Consulting, LLC, the Veris CPATrek takes students in the MAcc program to the key players in the U.S. financial markets. The school was named for William and Mary alumnus, Raymond A. “Chip” Mason in November 2005. It will move into its new state-of-art building, Alan B. Miller Hall, in Fall 2009. Miller Hall was named for William and Mary alumnus, Alan B. Miller.
The College of William and Mary, located in Williamsburg, Virginia is one of the nation’s premier public, liberal arts universities and believes that excellence in teaching is the key to unlocking intellectual and personal possibilities for students. Dedicated to this philosophy, the College provides high-quality undergraduate, graduate and professional education that prepares students to make significant contributions to the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation. At the age of 18, Jeffery Poff of Strawberry went to work on the line at ConAgra Foods. Poff stayed there for six years when he finally decided that he wanted more out of life. He wanted to learn, and realized that he couldn’t go any further in his position.
Poff felt like he was lacking social and communication skills and knew that this was something that he wanted to work on. Poff would go on to obtain his associate degree in accounting from the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, which would change his life forever.
Over the years Poff worked at companies such as Douglas Quickcut of Walnut Ridge and GDX Automotive.
“Douglas Quickcut was a failing and outdated company,” he said. Due to the foreign labor act when the company shut down Poff was able to attend school at UACCB for two years.
The next phase of Poff’s life started with the help of a job placement agency at GDX to do clerical work. Poff became interested in the plant processes, and saw an opportunity to utilize his accounting skills. He pointed out to management the plant’s waste issues and was soon promoted to VAVE engineer to control waste and monitor continuous improvement for the company.
“I feel so fortunate … so blessed to have had the professors at UACCB be a part of my life,” he said. “My professors inspired me to work very hard. … Oral Communications was the hardest class I ever had to take at UACCB; however, after that class I realized that I had something to say. In fact, I had a lot to say.”
He said his education has provided him with so many opportunities in his life.
“While working with GDX, I helped launch the Ford Edge program, created nine parts on the Lincoln MKX, three parts on the Ford Escape Hybrid, and had the opportunity to travel and see the world until the plant shut down,” he said. “Then I had to choose go back to work or school. I had a new baby, so I decided to go back to work.”
Poff returned as a production manager at ConAgra Foods where he would see the plant for the first time from a different point of view. Poff, now 34, has since been promoted to warehouse shipping and receiving manager. Poff intends to go back to school in January.
“I love hanging out with my family,” especially his three sons, ages 15, 12 and 2. “As far as my hobbies and interests go, I consider myself a very eclectic person. I enjoy all sorts of things from hunting, fishing, shooting sports, classical music, wine making (learned how to make wine from reading a book about it in the UACCB library), foreign rock music and art.”
He continued, “My accounting principles have had a huge effect on my life. … If I could speak to the younger people, the students at UACCB now, I would tell them to treat college less as a place to be and more of an event because it’s all here. You will get out what you put in.”
UACCB accounting instructor Tracy Broadwater said Poff was a wonderful student and fun to have in class.
“He loves to learn, and he was always able to see how the material we were learning could apply to real-world situations,” Broadwater said. “One of my favorite e-mails is one Jeff sent to me after he graduated telling me how he was using what he learned at UACCB in his job. I have enjoyed staying in touch with Jeff and hearing about the opportunities he has had since earning his degree. I am very proud of him.”
